Some historical remarks: In the University of Sofia "St. Kliment Ohridski" lectures on meteorology have been read since 1889,
one year after the creation of the university. As an independent academic body the Department "Meteorology and Geophysics" was recognized
in 1946 in the frames of Faculty of Physics and Mathematics, later, after the separation of the two faculties, it became a part of the Faculty of Physics.
Until 2000 students in the department graduated in two specialties: meteorology and geophysics. Since 2000 one B.Sc. program
"Astrophysics, meteorology and geophysics" and three M.Sc. degree programs
have been established 1) Meteorology, 2) Geophysics and 3)
Physics of the Earth, atmosphere and space. We would like to stress that the
Department of Meteorology and Geophysics in the University of Sofia is the unique place in Bulgaria where students can study the above-mentioned disciplines.
Think about it: In case you choose our department you will study our common home, the planet Earth, a complicated system of
interacting components and interesting processes. Our understanding of the Earth's health and maintaining the cleanness affects the
general direction of human evolution. The need of meteorologists and geophysicist will always be admitted and in the near future will
increase constantly. There are many possibilities for professional realization, both for the students with purely theoretical manner of
thinking and for those who are attracted by the practical application of their knowledge.
Lecturers in the department are highly qualified specialists. For the last 5 years with participation of the department
members have been published more then 120 papers, monographes or special books, most of them in well known journals abroad.
In the department research is ongoing in the frames of several projects of European Union and collaboration
with scientists from USA, France and Italy. There is possibility to involve students in the project work, if they wish to.
Possibilities for professional realization: For long time the students, graduated in the department, have found jobs
in several governmental institutions, dealing with different aspects of environmental studies, as well as in research groups
in various universties and institutes in Bulgaria and abroad. Among them: National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology, Geophysical Institute in
Bulgarian Academy of Science, Ministry of agricultural and forest activity, Direction of airtrafic management, Ministry of state defense,
Ministry of environment and water management, Energyproject, The Commission for warning and preventing the hail events.
Some of the students chose another career development and continue their scientific research under Ph.D. thesis in our department,
in Bulgarian Academy of Science or in universities and institutes abroad.
